Sounds like you have one of two problems. Either a vacuum leak or bad selecter switch. What year make and model car? If you have a vacuum leak and the selecter switch is vacuum operated that will happen. Check up by the firewall and you should see a vacuum hose entering through going to the inside of vehicle. Verify vacuum to switch and if there is vacuum replace switch.
