I made a vacuum pump from a refrigerator compressor almost 20 years ago and still use it. I was given a "scroll-type" compressor unit. I don't know how you can find out which units are scroll compressors. These produce the best vacuum levels. Mine pulls down to very near 1 atmosphere. Gauges are not accurate enough to say more. I would estimate 28"-30" Hg.

I'll send you an email w/ a description of the vacuum pump, how to use, and a picture. It's not hard,if you can find a decent refrigerator compressor.

You can find some used vac pumps on ebay, but they are usually over $100. I would recommend buying the best tools you can afford. If you learn auto ac, you'll be repairing vehicles for many years to come.

regards
