Small line usually equals high side and big line low side. The connections should be different I think so you should only be able to hook up to the correct one.

You didn't say what the pressures were so I'm asuming you didn't have a set of gauges. It would be a good idea to take pressure readings first to be on the safe side. Not to mention if there is something wrong other than just low on freon you might be wasting a can of R12.
