Refrigerant: 134A

Hi,
my 10 year old Mustang GT finally stopped providing me with cold air from the A/C. I have read up on recharges, but I am still worried about doing the recharge myself using the kit available at Walmart. What precautions should I take before recharging this? Also, do I need to vacuum the system or should I just add in more Freon? Lastly, am I going to have to buy a Chilton's manual to find out which is the low pressure line and which is the high pressure? Is there any other way to tell?

Thanks so much.
