Some Corvettes had a low compression compressor, not a standard A-6. The model and serial#, if still legible on the original, can be verified at a good chev parts department, or maybe an old Delco parts book. The purpose was to prevent belt squeal or the belt being thrown under very rapid acceleration- imagine that, a Corvette being rapidly accelerated.
How did I learn this? The hard way! I was 21, young and a knowitall, and accelerated from 25-60 as fast as I could while delivering the customer's car. I had to take it back to shop, after the belt came off, and research revealed the rebuilt standard A-6 was not the right part. I had, incorrectly, assumed all A6 were the same, just different clutches.
I hope this is the solution, let us know what you find out.
