I need to know if the dealer is jerking me around. Here's the background:

I took the car in to have it converted from R-12 to R-134a plus diagnose poor cooling. I presumed a leak, but that wasn't the issue. They reported that I had an obstruction in my condenser. So, I had them replace the condenser & receiver/dryer. Next they said that the compressor wasn't doing enough because my pressures were too low on the low side. At this point I freaked out over the money and decide to do some of the work myself. The dealer evacuated the refrigerant from the system for me.

I purchased a new (not rebuilt) compressor w/ coil & pully from Autozone ($410) (Ready-Aire - 4-seasons...68300 - Comp - 10PA17C - New). I added about 3 oz. of PAG oil (called the dealer to make sure it was compatible with what they used). Vacuumed 30" for about an hour with my new Robinair 15234 VacuMaster pump. The vacuum held so I proceeded to charge with R-134a.

It was about 72 degrees ambient temp outside, so I was initially shooting for 165 PSI on the high side. When I reached that point, the low side was around 20 PSI with the engine idling. I checked the vent temp and it was warm (no cooler than ambient). I proceeded to push the charge up to about 175 PSI and the vent temps dropped some. The coolest I could get it to blow was about 68 degrees F at 70 MPH on the highway. I was worried that I over-charged it (it took nearly four 12oz. cans to reach these pressures which I thought was unusual) so I let some out of the system to bring it back down to about 155-160 PSI. No different in the vent temp was noticed.

I took it back into the dealer today and described the whole situation. The just called and told me that they think the compressor isn't working right. The pressures are two low, esp. considering how much refrigerant is in the system. He then asked me if I charged the system with the engine running to which I replied, "yes." He said that's not the right way to charge an A/C system which was news to me!

Does this sound reasonable? Is the new compressor bad or could there be another problem with my system? Did I inadvertently damage the new compressor? I'm a little hesitant to let them proceed with another $1200-$1500 in parts & labor. :-/
