George,
Thanks for the reply. Vegas has tried to help educate me in your absence, he even let me bother him on the phone for nearly an hour.
I don't want to flush the system because
1)it is a full size van with two a/c's and miles of lines and
2) if I did it would get my last six can of R-12 and some good ole 525 MO.
So after talking to Vegas I ordered some CoolTop and when it comes I plan to re-vacuum my system (it won't get the water out of the oil but I think it will help to dry out the dryer - is this right?) The system holds 4.25 lbs (68 oz) of R-134 so the charge shold be between 61 to about 63 oz of CoolTop I will add five cans of CoolTop to a vacuumed system and add a little R-134 if needed depending on low/high side pressures. I will measure the oil lost from the system when I 'reclaim' the current R-134 charge and add this amount back. Based on your comments and the fact that my system was clean on the inside I will skip changing the dryer. Please let me know if you agree - the dryer isn't hard to change or expensive but why do it if it won't help?
Maybe the thing will last until the 03s are out and GM will put some decent brakes on them that year (unlike the 99 - 02 trucks, the rear brakes are still drums and they s--k about as bad as the R-134 ac system. (In fairness it always worked well except at idle - still does - but the moisture issue has me worried that it will soon self-destruct)
Thanks again,
Gil
