Janice-It sound like the idler berings on the compressor are bad. To check for sure, remove the fan belt from the compressor and spin the pulley-it should have no free play, noise of roughness.When the compressor is engaged, this idler pulley bering is not in use, hence no noise. You can change it yourself IF you have a clutch pulley remover and good snap-ring pliers, and can press out the old bering and press in the new one.
