Stench agents in Australian HC Refrigerants are compulsary and are used for Safety. The stench ( mercaptan or other smell) is added in 25 ppm and will not harm any internal part of the MAC system.
Although it may give the DIY'r the idea that BBQ gas is used ( which is dangerous to use) there is a significant protection for both car owner as well as technician when smelling this Stench, which makes anybody aware that a gasleak is present.
Australian/NewZealand Standard 1677 indicates that a stench has to be added to the refrigerant.
