R12 to R134 Auto conversion

Since my compressor has gone bad I would like to convert over to R134.
A mechanic told me that the hoses would have to be changed along
with other items. That the R134 gas would leak through the R12 hoses.
Other information I have received contradict this.
I need to know the true. What is required in order to convert my
system to R134.
