I did remove the plastic screens (beneath the windshield wipers) and everything was perfectly clean there.
I never thought about simply replacing the blower motor; maybe I'll try that. But the one I have doesn't make any odd noises or anything.
And I really could have sworn that there's some kind of extra-fast blower motor for GM cars.
