I bought an ID set but it's not much ID any more. I have sealed both gauges with O-rings. I have clipped all the ends. The ends that go to gauge are attached with 3/16" barbs and hose clamps. The ends that go to the car are retrofitted with real RobinAir ends. The fill hose has a ball valve shutoff at the guage and runs into a manifold for multifarious fittings at the other end.
As for bad gauge sets, they have plenty of problems. NPT threads don't seal. End rubbers wear out quickly and don't seal. Most fall out into parts of your car you never knew were there. Shutoff spiggots don't seal perfectly. Stay away from the ID set unless you want to make all those mods providing you can find the Robinair ends. Spend the extra money for Warren's cheapo set. I'd buy it but I now have my ID working quite well and other gauge sets wouldn't necessairly have the 1/8NPT fittings I have gotten to like so well.
