That is a good question. I know that a great deal of tool manufacturers including MAC and Snap On make a universal guage set. If they make it, there has to be some merit to it. I don't think that enough oil could change paths to de any real damage. This might help though.
1. When you are done checking a system (R12 or R134a) remove the high pressure hose from the system.
2. Whith the high side hose removed and capped (very important) open both valves.
This will pull all the liquid refrigerant from the high side of the guage set into the low side of the system. This will also pull 99% of the oil back in with it. This is how I do it just because I don't like leaving that much pressure on the guage for a long time.
