Unlike what you may hear from the news or an AC salesman/mechanic, the alternative products are quite reliable and safe when used as directed. Some products have conditional use limitations like barrier hoses and oil which should be clearly spelled out in the documentation. Your failed system is most likely because of a normal problem.

One particular problem with all blends including Freeze 12 is fractionation. The vapor pressure of the different gasses is different so one may leak out faster than another. If you had leaks and used Freeze 12 then you did wrong. Blends must be used in leak free systems.

From this page I see that Freeze-12 has R-134a in it. This gas leaks easily through bad fittings or non barrier hoses which could leave with a 20% full but non functional system having the pressure of the R-142b left behind.

If it is too high you don't want to be modifying any switches. Since you must have a leak somewhere you no longer know what is in there. Refrigerants other than pure R-12 and R-134a are expensive to dispose of. Most shops won't want to talk to you.
