Well, here's how I look at it. What's the difference if you turn it on with the switch. or turn it on with the ignition? I nnever turn mine off. I'm lucky to remember to turn the car off!! My experience tells me it's ok. I don't know what the mfgrs. say. Seeya.

P.S> It's possible that in the older days, the batteries and charging systems couldn't support it. I don't know. I've had 12v batteries. Not like NickD. He grew up with 6volt. Ha!! Just kiddikg, Nick!
