I tend to use dye - I have found it to find leaks a leak dectector will not find- a leak detector depends on the system leaking consistently- at all times- dye will show a leak that is intermittent- I have stuck a leak detector in the snout of a compressor (no clutch) and it would go off alsmost every half hr- I could see the bubble form and pop- but what if I would have been checking for only 1-2 min- my leak detector would have said everything was lovely-- also I have found only the green dye and black lite and the ultraviolet lenses (glasses) are completely necessary- I have overlooked dye stains by not using the glasses- even though they look silly when wearing them.......
